It was a pretty good Saturday night, Feb. 18, for the McDonnell family at Assembly Hall as the brothers from Morrison both won state titles at the IHSA Class 1A Wrestling Tournament in Champaign.
Mark McDonnell closed out an impressive grappling career with his second straight title capturing the first place medal at 145 pounds and the his brother, Matt, followed with a state title of his own at 195 pounds.
Mark pinned Talon Paul of Stillman Valley in the first period of the title bout while Matt defeated Lena-Winslow’s Jared Starver 6-2 in his championship match.
The championship bout at 145 pounds was a repeat performance of last week’s Byron Sectional title bout against Talon Paul, who entered the title at 30-3.
McDonnell made quick work of Paul in the finals with two takedowns for a 4-2 lead and then used a near-side cradle to put Paul to his back for the pin with four seconds left in the first period. The senior ends his season at 26-1.
Mark McDonnell began his repeat performance with a 12-2 major decision over Seth Purell of Vandalia on Thursday and then reached the semi-finals with a dominating 9-3 win over Brad Blechschmidt (30-6) of Lisle.
In the semi-finals against Alex Valentine of Seneca (30-3), the senior had his hands full tied at 4-4 after two periods, but McDonnell got a reversal for a 6-4 lead and then pinned Valentine at the 5:37 mark.
McDonnell ends his career as a four-time state medalist taking second at 140 his sophomore year and third at 125 pounds as a freshman.
After not qualifying for last year’s state tourney, Matt McDonnell made the most of this year’s trip to state, capturing a state title at 195 pounds.
In the title bout, McDonnell (43-2) recorded a first period takedown and a second period reversal for a 4-2 lead. He added another takedown in the final two minutes for a 6-2 victory.
The Morrison senior opened the tournament with a 18-2 technical fall over Brandon Webb (30-13) of Seneca then beat Kenny Lindsey (32-3) of St. Joseph-Odgen 5-3.
In the semi-finals, McDonnell opened grabbed a 2-0 first period lead over Frank Hollo (36-7) of Litchfield and after an escape to open up the second period, added another take down and two back points for a 7-0 lead en route to a 10-2 win.
Other area wrestlers
West Carroll’s Jeff Casey went 2-2 at the state tournament but didn’t place at 120 pounds, ending his sophomore season at 35-10.
Casey opened in impressive fashion on Thursday pinning Macomb Sectional Champion Brandon Rohig of Kewanee (32-7) in the first period. On Friday morning, the West Carroll grappler fell to Casey Brown (34-6) of Coal City 14-4, putting Casey in the wrestlebacks.
He responded with a 8-4 decision over Payton Stiefle of Robinson but Casey’s chances for a medal ended on Saturday morning when he was pinned by Plano’s Jose Villarreal (35-7) in 3:05.
“Jeff represented us really nice, he wrestled hard and ran into a couple of tough guys. Great learning experience for a sophomore,” West Carroll head coach Jeff McIntyre said after the tournament.
Josh Alber (44-0) of Dakota won the title at 120 pounds, while Jake Apple (182) and Ty Harmston ( 220) both placed second at their respective weight classes. Other area place winners included Gunner Wenger, Le-Win, 3rd, 106 pounds; Carver James, Dakota, 3rd, 126 pounds; Austin McPeek, Le-Win, 3rd, 132 pounds; and Quincy Kalkbrenner, Le-Win, 3rd, 138 pounds.

Freeport Aquin 62 Milledgeville 44
The Bulldogs took a twenty to seven first quarter lead in Freeport on Tuesday night enroute to the eighteen point victory. Aquin increased their lead to twenty four points (35-11) at the intermission. The lead was twenty one points (54-23) going into the final period. The Missiles took the fourth quarter scoring edge (21-8) but it wasn’t nearly enough to claw them back into the game. Ten different players put points on the board for the Bulldogs, led by Patrick Schmelzle’s thirteen points. Zach Herin and Caleb Skoog who each scored nine points led the Missiles on the scoreboard.
Polo 49 Indian Creek 47
The Marcos and Timber Wolves battled to a thirteen all tie after one quarter and Polo was able to hold off Indian Creek for the narrow two point win. Polo led by five points (27-22) at the intermission and increased their led to nine points (40-31) going into the fourth quarter. The Timber Wolves outscored the Marcos sixteen to nine in the final quarter but couldn’t quite complete the comeback. Shane Geary led Polo, and all scorers in the contest with twenty four points. Indian Creek was topped in scoring by Garrison Govig who scored a dozen points.
Stockton 48 Le-Win 46
The Blackhawks held a slim eleven to nine first quarter lead and held off the Panthers to take the two point victory. Stockton maintained that two point lead at the intermission (25-23) but a seventeen to eleven third quarter Le-Win scoring advantage put the Panthers up forty to thirty six going into quarter four. Stockton outscored the Panthers twelve to six in the final period to make the margin of the win for Stockton. The Blackhawks Jared Hess and Trent Schubert paced Stockton, with both dropping in eleven points. Adam Werhane’s sixteen points led le-Win with teammate Tevin Sellers adding fourteen points.
AFC 64 Forreston 53
The Raiders took an eighteen to ten first quarter lead and cruised to the eleven point win. AFC maintained their eight point lead at the half (33-25). They extended that lead to nine points (46-37) going into the final quarter and outscored the Cardinals eighteen to sixteen in the fourth. Ermir Ramadani led the Raiders with eighteen points while teammate Ryan Mairs scored sixteen points. Tanner Bronkema’s twenty two points led Forreston with Cody Whitehead adding thirteen.

In a tight game throughout the Cougars were able to hold on to defeat the Wolves by three points at home on Wednesday night. Eastland held a slim two point lead (12-10) at the end of the first quarter. A sixteen to ten second quarter scoring advantage put the Wolves up by four points (26-22) at the intermission. The Cougars outscored the Wolves nineteen to eleven in the third quarter to take a forty one to thirty seven lead into the final quarter. Pearl City held a thirteen to twelve fourth quarter advantage but couldn’t complete their comeback. Dalton Shaner led Eastland in scoring with fourteen points with teammate Chase Wilhelms adding thirteen. The Wolves Jason Kurth led all scorers in the contest with twenty three points.
Forreston 43 Dakota 37
The Cardinals hosted the Indians and Forreston was able to pull off the six point upset victory. The Cardinals jumped out to a sixteen to eight first quarter lead and extended their lead to thirteen points (28-15) at the half. Dakota clawed their way back to within nine points (38-29) going into the final quarter but could get no closer than the final margin of victory. Tanner Bronkema led the Cardinals (14-13,9-4) with twenty points and Robert Cornelius chipped in with ten points. Dakota (21-5,9-3) was led in scoring by Brett Benning who scored ten points.

Eastland 65 Stockton 47
The Cougars took and eleven to ten first quarter lead and held the same one point lead (29-28) at the intermission. An eighteen to nine third quarter scoring advantage put Eastland up by ten points (47-37) going into the final quarter. The Cougars then outscored the Blackhawks eighteen to ten in the final period. Dalton Shaner and Tyler Giedd led the Cougars on the scoreboard, with each dropping in seventeen points while teammate Chase Wilhelms added fourteen points. Stockton was led by Reilly Calhoun’s seventeen points with Cole Schamberger adding thirteen points.

The Marcos jumped out to a twenty one to ten first quarter lead and cruised to the twenty point win. Polo led by nineteen points (37-18) at the half and held a twenty five point lead (53-28) going into quarter number four. The Missiles outscored the Marcos nineteen to fourteen in the final period. Polo was led in scoring by AJ Dollmeyer’s sixteen points with Michael Geary adding ten. The Missiles were led by Jordan Harris who scored thirteen points.
West Carroll 62 Pearl City 55
The host Wolves took a fifteen to twelve first quarter lead but couldn’t hold off the Thunder as West Carroll took the seven point victory. The Thunder came back in the second quarter to knot the score at thirty two points apiece at the halftime intermission. The Thunder outscored Pearl City twelve to six in quarter three to take a six point lead (44-38) and outscored the Wolves eighteen to seventeen in the fourth. Thunder head coach Josh Knuth commented, “It was a physical game tonight which should help us get ready for the regionals. We played some good stretches of basketball but were careless with the ball at times. We have to play a netter, more consistent defensive game come next week in the regional. I was proud of the way our kids battled through some adversity tonight. We must get better defensively as we head into the postseason.” Eric Naples led West Carroll with twenty two points and Brady Edwards added fifteen. Pearl City was led by Jason Kurth who dumped in twenty nine points to lead all scorers in the contest.

The Lady Bulldogs took a seventeen to nine first quarter lead and cruised to the easy twenty two point victory. Aquin had a commanding thirty eight to fifteen half time lead and kept the lead at twenty three points (47-24) going into the final quarter. The Lady Hawks outscored Freeport Aquin eight to seven in the fourth but it wasn’t enough. Lady Bulldog Sophie Brunner led Freeport Aquin with twenty five points. Randi Maynard led the Lady Hawks with a dozen points.

Prophetstown 45 E. Dubuque 28
The Lady Prophets and Lady Warriors were tied at five points each after one quarter but Prophetstown took a five point lead (17-12) at the half. Their lead remained at five points (29-24) going into quarter four and the Lady Prophets broke the contest open, outscoring East Dubuque sixteen to four in the final quarter. The Lady Prophets Riley Walters topped all scorers in the game with twenty two points with teammate Cassie Reilley adding nine points. East Dubuque was led by Kalyn Theill’s eight points.

Freeport Aquin 36 Prophetstown 24
Freeport Aquin had Sophie Brunner and Aubrey Chang in their lineup and that would prove to be too much for the Lady Prophets as Aquin (29-4) took the 36-24 Eastland Sectional Championship game on Thursday evening in Lanark. Brunner scored twenty three of the Lady Bulldogs thirty six and Chang added ten points. The Lady Bulldogs took a six to five first quarter lead and led by three points (15-12) at the half time intermission. The Lady Prophets (22-10) cut that lead to just two points (24-22) going into the final quarter and that is when Brunner and Chang took over. Aquin outscored the Lady Prophets twelve to two with Brunner scoring seven of her twenty three in the final period and Chang adding four key free throws to put away Prophetstown. Cassie Reiley led the Lady Prophets with seven points. Three point shootout advancing players include Taylor Grenoble of Milledgeville, Rachel Walton of Forreston, Kaitlyn Kelsey of Durand and Cassie Reiley of Prophetstown.
